BNP Politician Farid Uddin Gazi Threatens to Burn Hindu Candidate Gobinda Chandra Mondal Alive Over His Election Candidacy and a Jizya-Like BDT 5 Million Extortion Demand

A chilling death threat against a Hindu businessman in Bauphal under Patuakhali District, has sparked grave concerns over minority security, political intimidation, and the erosion of democratic rights in Bangladesh.

Gobinda Chandra Mondal, a Hindu community representative and Dhaka-based real-estate businessman, has faced repeated threats since announcing his candidacy for the upcoming Bauphal Sadar Union Parishad election.

The alleged perpetrator, Farid Uddin Gazi, a member of the Upazila BNP from Bilbilas village, is accused of threatening to burn Mondal alive. In a 1-minute-and-57-second phone conversation circulated on social media, Gazi tells that he really wants to set the Hindu businessman on fire while Gobinda is still alive. He says that he had searched for Gobinda but the businessman and community leader was out of station.

Mondal has reportedly filed a General Diary at Bauphal Police Station, citing serious concerns for his safety. He further alleged that Gazi had previously demanded BDT 50 lakh to force him to withdraw his candidacy, raising additional questions about political coercion and extortion.

Gazi was subsequently arrested in connection with a cheque fraud case. Police have reportedly assured that legal action will be considered regarding the alleged death threats. Local and district BNP representatives have also promised organizational action.

Promises cannot substitute for justice. Authorities must conduct an impartial investigation, ensure Mondal’s immediate protection and establish accountability through due process. Political affiliation must never shield anyone from the law.

The safety of Bangladesh’s Hindu citizen and their equal right to participate in elections must not be negotiable.
