After social media outrage and a petition in the Calcutta High Court, the Tripura govt suspended senior IFS officer Praveen Lal Agarwal for naming lions. Also, the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal govt to rename the lion and lioness.
On the 13th of February this year, a lion and a lioness were brought to Siliguri Safari Park. The lion named ‘Akbar’ and the lioness named ‘Sita’ were kept together in an enclosure in the safari park.
As the news spread, sharp reactions and protests came from the netizens. But the authority of the safari park just ignored the people’s anger.
Against this, VHP filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court alleging to hurt religious sentiments.
During the hearing, the West Bengal Forest Department informed the High Court that the naming process was done in Tripura’s Sepahijala Zoological Park. After this, Justice Sougata Bhattacharya directed to rename the lion and the lioness.
