Tensions Mount in Debpukur of West Bengal Over Newly Converted Christians Repeatedly Targeting Economically Vulnerable Hindus With Cash and Job Promises

Tensions have erupted in the Debpukur region of Barrackpore under West Bengal, following allegations of an organised campaign to persuade economically vulnerable Hindus to convert to Christianity.

Local residents allege that Christian women, some reportedly wearing traditional Hindu ornaments such as shankha and pola, have repeatedly approached Hindu families in the area over recent months, allegedly promising financial assistance and improved economic prospects. Residents further claim that employment opportunities were offered as an incentive for conversion.

The allegations have generated growing unease among sections of the local Hindu community, particularly over claims that economic hardship is being exploited to facilitate religious proselytisation. Residents also allege that some of those involved are recent converts themselves.

On 18 September, a group of local Hindu women, reportedly encouraged by members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, confronted the women during an alleged proselytisation attempt. A heated exchange followed and reportedly escalated into a minor scuffle, although no serious injuries were reported.

The incident has led to heightened tensions in Debpukur, underscoring the need for an impartial investigation into the allegations and for authorities to prevent intimidation, coercion or violence.
