68-Year-Old Hindu Widow Pranati Rani Das Accuses Sohail Azad of Burning Down Her Ancestral Home, Leaving Her Penniless and Homeless Amid Alleged Police Inaction in Mirsarai of Chattogram

68-year-old Hindu widow Pranati Rani Das has accused Sohail Azad of setting fire to her home while she was sleeping inside at approximately 2:30 a.m. on September 18 in the Mithachhara area of Mirsarai under Chattogram.

According to Pranati Rani, the blaze reduced her house and all her belongings to ashes, leaving her facing the devastating loss of her home, possessions and personal security.

The widow alleges that the arson was not an isolated act of destruction but a deliberately planned attempt to force her off her ancestral land amid a long-standing dispute with Sohail Azad over property possession.

Pranati Rani claims that Sohail had previously cut down trees on the disputed portion of her land without her consent. She further alleges that even after reporting the alleged encroachment and tree-cutting to police, no effective action was taken.

For a vulnerable elderly widow, such inaction carries consequences far beyond a property dispute. When complaints go unaddressed, those accused of intimidation perceive the absence of accountability as permission to escalate.

Police have stated that they have not yet received a written complaint concerning the alleged arson. Authorities say an investigation will be conducted once a formal complaint is submitted.

Pranati Rani Das’s allegations require a prompt, impartial and evidence-based investigation. The circumstances surrounding the fire, the ongoing land dispute and the alleged failure to act on earlier complaints must be examined.
