Hindu Voice Team: A controversy has erupted in Sivaganga district after a complaint was lodged against the warden of a government girls’ hostel in Kalayarkoil, accusing her of forcing students to read the Bible and attend Christian worship services.
The hostel, situated opposite the Government Teachers Training Institute, houses 68 girls studying from class six to twelve. According to the complaint filed by Manimekalai, a parent from Maruthanganallur, warden Lakshmi of Karaikudi regularly compelled students to participate in Bible sessions and prayers, raising fears of religious conversion inside a state-run institution. The complaint also alleged that the hostel serves food made from rotten vegetables, exposing children to health risks.
The matter came to light when parents expressed outrage over what they called an attempt to violate the religious freedom of their children. The district administration has since taken up the issue, with Collector P. Porkodi ordering an inquiry.
In her defense, warden Lakshmi admitted that she made students sing hymns and read the Bible during examination periods, claiming it was done to “boost morale.” She further stated that the practice was discontinued after the complaint was raised and that she has already submitted a written explanation to the District Adi Dravidar Welfare Office.
The incident has sparked widespread concern, with parents and community members demanding strict action against those misusing their authority in state institutions. Observers note that this case underscores the urgent need to safeguard children’s rights and ensure that government hostels remain free from any form of religious coercion.
