RANGUNIA, CHATTAGRAM, April 10th, 2026 :

Fear, grief and outrage have swept through the Hindu residents of Rangunia Upazila after two revered temples were vandalized and looted in another attack against faith and religious freedom.

So-called “unidentified assailants” reportedly broke into the Ma Bhagabati Temple and the Shiva Temple in Pomra Union, leaving behind a trail of destruction that has shaken devotees and intensified ever-present concerns over the safety of Hindu religious sites in the region.

A Calculated Attack on Places of Worship

According to local residents and members of the temple committees, the perpetrators entered the temple premises under the cover of darkness before targeting the inner sanctum desecrating the idols, vandalising religious artifacts and ransacking the temple interiors. The attackers are believed to have escaped with a significant quantity of gold ornaments and other valuables offered to the deities by devotees over the years.

The aftermath was heartbreaking.

Images emerging from the site reveal broken frames, scattered ritual objects, damaged idols and shattered remnants of what had long been a place of prayer, solace, and spiritual refuge. Devotees arriving at dawn were met with scenes of devastation, many left in tears as they surveyed the damage.

For the local Hindu community, this was a violation of sacred space and a direct assault on religious dignity.

Police Launch Investigation

Following the incident, local police officials rushed to the temples to assess the extent of the damage and begin collecting evidence.

Authorities have assured residents that a full-scale investigation is underway.

“We are taking this matter very seriously. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for this act of desecration and theft,” a police representative said.

Despite the assurances, anxiety remains high, with community members demanding swift arrests and visible action from law enforcement, instead of the usual assurances.

Community Outcry and Demand for Justice

The attack has sparked strong condemnation from Hindu religious, cultural and social organizations across the area.

The Rangunia Upazila branch of the Bangladesh Gita Shiksha Committee (GASHIS) has issued a formal statement, calling for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and stronger security measures for temples and minority places of worship.

Community leaders have warned that such incidents threaten the very social fabric of the region.

A Community on Edge

For now, the people of Rangunia remain on high alert.

As devotees begin the painful process of restoring the damaged shrines, the emotional scars left by the attack may take far longer to heal.

What was stolen was not only gold and ornaments, but also a sense of safety, sanctity, and trust.

A local video report circulating online has further captured the scale of the destruction and the anguish of the affected community, adding visual testimony to an incident that has already stirred widespread concern.
