Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League has won the recent parliamentary elections amid boycott calls from the opposition parties. But, still, Hindu minorities are not safe in the country. The Hindu minorities faced attacks in different parts of the country soon after the results came out. And in most cases, allegations are against the workers and leaders of the ruling party Awami League.

In Sirajganj, Islamists, along with cadres of the Awami League, attacked Hindu minorities. They tortured and beat up Hindu women, vandalised homes and looted valuable things. Islamists also attacked a Hindu temple in Sirajganj and broke the Murti(idol) of the temple. Local Hindus alleged that Awami League cadres attacked them. Awami League cadres tortured the Hindu minorities, alleging that they didn’t vote for the Awami League candidate.

In another incident, Hindu minority families faced the same type of torture in the Gaibandha district of Bangladesh. Awami League-led Islamists allegedly attacked Hindu minorities. Hindu houses were vandalised and looted. Also, Hindus were beaten up.

Also, news of Hindu persecution is coming up from several districts of Bangladesh. In several districts, Awami League leaders tortured Hindu minorities who went to cast their votes. In Faridpur, Awami League cadres tortured Hindu minorities in polling stations for fear that they would cast their votes against the ruling party. Several Hindu minorities alleged that Awami League cadres tortured them, beat them up and drove them away from polling stations.

In Jhenaidah, unknown goons brutally murdered a Hindu leader of the ruling party Awami League. Important fact is that, Awami League candidate lost to the independent candidate in Jhenaidah-2 Constituency.

Notably, on the 7th of January this year, parliamentary elections were held in Bangladesh. After the results came out, Sheikh Hasina congratulated party workers on the grand victory.  But analysis says that this year’s elections were a complete joke. Low voter turnout(less than 50 per cent) and widespread violence have been reported in several parts of the country.
