Hindu Voice Team: The Cachar Court (Additional Sessions Judge, Special Judge, POCSO) in Assam has convicted and sentenced a 20-year-old man, Anamul Haque Laskar, to 20 years in prison for the abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl. The judgment was passed on October 13, 2025.

Laskar, a resident of the Dumurghat area under Udharbond Police Station, was found guilty of the crime that took place on the night of June 7, 2024, in the Channighat Tea Garden area.

The Incident and Trial

According to court records, the incident occurred around 8 PM while the minor tribal girl was studying in her room. Laskar allegedly took advantage of the father being away and the mother being in the adjacent kitchen to abduct the girl.

The victim’s mother filed an FIR at Udharbond Police Station the following day after her search for the missing girl proved futile that night.
The prosecution’s case detailed that Laskar took the girl in an auto to a deserted location near the Arunabond Tea Estate, several kilometers away, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her twice. They reportedly spent the night in the vehicle, and Laskar dropped her near her home the next morning before fleeing.

The victim’s statement to authorities mentioned a pre-existing “relationship” with Laskar, and that she was unaware of his marital status until the incident. Despite this claim, the court proceeded under the strict provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, where the consent of a minor is legally irrelevant.

Initial reports and the victim’s account suggested the involvement of a neighbour, Selim Uddin, and his wife, who allegedly lured the girl out and handed her over to the accused. However, the subsequent charge sheet named only Anamul Haque Laskar as the accused.

The Sentencing

The Cachar Court found Anamul Haque Laskar guilty on both counts and imposed the following sentences:
Under Section 363 IPC (Kidnapping): 3 years imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000.
Under Section 4 of the POCSO Act: 20 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹20,000.
The court stipulated that both sentences would run concurrently, meaning Laskar will effectively serve 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. An additional one month and six months of imprisonment were imposed in default of the respective fines, ensuring the severity of the punishment is maintained.
The 20-year sentence under the POCSO Act reaffirms the judicial commitment to a stringent penal approach in cases of sexual offences against children, aiming for strong deterrence.
