“After Lovely Khatun controversy, fresh storm over Chemani Bibi; allegations claim she entered India from Bangladesh in 2006, while questions arise over her OBC certificate and identity documents.”

Malda, West Bengal: A fresh political storm has erupted in Malda after serious allegations were levelled against Chemani Bibi, the Trinamool Congress chief of Golapganj Gram Panchayat, with claims that she originally came to India from Bangladesh and subsequently obtained Indian identity and caste documents through allegedly fraudulent means.

According to the allegations, Chemani Bibi—also known as Chameli Bibi—was a resident of Shibganj in Bangladesh’s Chapai Nawabganj district, where she was allegedly married to a Bangladeshi national. It is claimed that she entered India in 2006 with her five-year-old child and later remarried after settling in Malda.

The controversy has deepened amid claims that her father still possesses a Bangladeshi voter identity card while also having Indian electoral documents. Questions have also been raised over the authenticity of Chemani Bibi’s OBC certificate and other documents used to establish her identity in India.

The allegations have reportedly been submitted to the Malda Superintendent of Police, BDO and SDO, along with supporting documents. It has further been claimed that the names of Chemani Bibi and members of her family were deleted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The allegations have triggered a political confrontation over how a person whose citizenship is now being questioned could reach an elected constitutional position.

Former BJP MLA from English Bazar Srirupa Mitra Choudhury has publicly raised the issue, alleging that Chemani Bibi entered India illegally from Bangladesh in 2006 and that her Indian citizenship-related certificates are forged. She also said that investigations had been ordered by the authorities.

Chemani Bibi, however, has denied the allegations.

The case comes after the earlier controversy surrounding TMC’s Lovely Khatun, another Malda panchayat chief who faced allegations of being a Bangladeshi infiltrator. Following a High Court order, the administration cancelled her post as panchayat chief, her panchayat membership and her OBC certificate in February last year.
