A Muslim man from Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district has embraced Sanatan Hindu Dharma, stating that his decision was influenced by his longstanding discomfort with the practice of animal slaughter associated with Bakrid celebrations.
The man, formerly known as Bilal and a resident of Khirkia, formally converted to Hinduism during a religious ceremony held at the renowned Mahadevgarh Temple on Saturday. Following the conversion, he adopted the name Vishal.
According to temple authorities, the ceremony was conducted in the presence of local devotees, priests, and members of organisations associated with Sanatan Hindu Dharma. Traditional Hindu rituals were performed as part of the conversion process, and Vishal underwent a ceremonial head-shaving ritual within the temple premises.
Temple operator Ashok Paliwal stated that the conversion was carried out voluntarily and at Vishal’s own request. He described the event as a “ghar wapsi” (homecoming) ceremony conducted in accordance with traditional Hindu customs.
Speaking about his decision, Vishal said he had been deeply disturbed since childhood by the slaughter of animals during Bakrid celebrations. He claimed that witnessing such practices over the years left a lasting emotional impact on him and gradually led him to question his religious beliefs.
According to Vishal, the recent observance of Bakrid reignited those feelings and prompted him to seriously consider adopting a different spiritual path. He said he was also inspired by the religious significance of the ongoing Purushottam month, a sacred period in Hindu tradition dedicated to devotion and spiritual reflection.
As part of the conversion ceremony, priests performed a series of purification rituals known as the “10 Vidhi Snan.” Temple authorities said the process involved ceremonial bathing using various substances considered sacred in Hindu tradition, accompanied by the chanting of Vedic mantras.
Following the completion of the rituals, a Maha Aarti dedicated to Lord Shiva was conducted. Devotees gathered at the temple participated in prayers and religious chants, including “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Shri Ram.”
At the conclusion of the programme, temple authorities presented Vishal with a copy of the Ramayana and encouraged him to study the teachings and traditions of Sanatan Dharma. Vishal stated that he intends to continue learning about his adopted faith and follow its religious principles in his daily life.
The event attracted considerable attention among local residents and devotees, with temple officials describing it as a significant religious occasion.
