Hacked to Death, Stuffed Into a Drum and Dumped in a Canal: Jewellery Craftsman Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar’s Mutilated Remains Recovered Three Days After His Disappearance in Mymensingh, Police Yet To Register A Case

A plastic drum drifting beneath a sluice gate has revealed a killing that has left behind a trail of disturbing questions. Residents near the Begunbari sluice gate in Mymensingh noticed a suspicious plastic drum floating in the canal on the morning of 23rd September. When police arrived and opened it, they found a sack-wrapped, badly decomposed body inside with a token issued by the Mymensingh Hindu Cooperative Credit Union Limited.

Investigators contacted the institution, whose officials helped identify the man as 50-year-old Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, a jewellery craftsman and co-owner of a jewellery shop in Atharbari Building area. His wife, Sumita Rani and son Joy later confirmed his identity.

But Niranjan had already been missing for three days. He disappeared from his rented home in the city’s Stadium area on September 20. A nephew reportedly saw him in the same area the following day. According to police, Niranjan had previously stayed away from home for three or four days before returning. They believed he would come back. This time, his remains surfaced inside a plastic drum in a canal.

Police say the body bore sharp-weapon injuries to the head and chest. Muhammad Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said investigators initially suspect that Niranjan was killed before his body was placed inside the drum and dumped into the water.

As of Friday morning, police had not detained any suspect. No case had yet been formally filed.
