What began as an argument over the harvesting of rice ended in bloodshed on a village road in Joypurhat, where 50-year-old daily wage laborer was beaten to death in broad daylight, leaving local Hindus reeling in shock and grief.

The victim, Shyamal Chandra Mali, a resident of Kashira Shilpara village in Akkelpur Upazila, was on his way to the local market on Saturday afternoon when he encountered Hasan Ali, with whom he had an ongoing dispute over the cutting of paddy from a piece of farmland.

According to police and local witnesses, a heated exchange erupted between the two men. Moments later, the confrontation turned deadly.

Witnesses state that Hasan Ali struck Shyamal from behind with a heavy tree branch, landing a devastating blow to the back of his head. The attack sent the laborer crashing onto the road, critically injured and fighting for his life.

Villagers rushed to the scene and desperately transported him to Akkelpur Upazila Health Complex. Doctors, however, could do nothing to save him. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

For residents of the area, the killing has become a symbol of how quickly ordinary disputes can descend into irreversible tragedy. Neighbors described Shyamal as a hardworking man who earned his living through daily labor and had left home that day expecting nothing more than another ordinary afternoon.

Instead, he never returned.

The shocking nature of the attack triggered immediate anger among local Hindu residents, who detained the accused at the scene and handed him over to police before he could flee.

Akkelpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahin Reza confirmed that the suspect is in police custody and that a murder case is being processed. Authorities are preparing to conduct an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.
