Hindu Voice Team: Concerns over cross-border infiltration have intensified in Tripura, as local residents and police officials report a rise in the number of people allegedly entering the state illegally from neighbouring Bangladesh.

According to police records from the Khoyai subdivision, 22 individuals have been detained over the past two weeks on charges of illegal entry. The arrests include several Bangladeshi nationals, along with two Indian auto-rickshaw drivers accused of transporting the group from the border areas to various locations inside Tripura.

Local residents claim that despite border fencing and security arrangements, certain stretches of the India-Bangladesh border remain vulnerable. They allege that small-scale brokers are facilitating illegal movement across the border in exchange for payments of around ₹2,000 per person.

During one recent operation, police intercepted a vehicle carrying 11 individuals. Upon questioning, six of them reportedly admitted to being residents of Brahmanbaria and Habiganj districts in Bangladesh. The remaining five claimed to be Indian citizens from Komalpur and Silchar. Police later booked the two auto-rickshaw drivers involved and confiscated the vehicles used.

Superintendent of Police Ranaditya Das stated that legal proceedings have begun in accordance with immigration and border security laws, and investigations are underway to identify local networks suspected of aiding the illegal crossings.

Khoyai subdivision shares approximately 61.5 km of international border with Bangladesh. The area is guarded by the Border Security Force (BSF), with fencing, floodlights and surveillance devices installed in several sectors. However, residents argue that infiltration attempts continue, particularly after dark, through remote and less-monitored locations.

Authorities have not yet issued a formal statement on whether additional measures will be adopted to strengthen security in the affected border areas.
