A Hindu businessman and his elderly mother were among four people injured after an armed mob of approximately 15–20 individuals allegedly launched a violent daylight attack on a business establishment in Chitalmari Upazila of Bagerhat district, leaving the principal victim hospitalized with serious injuries and raising concerns over the police response.

The attack took place at approximately 1:11 p.m. on Wednesday at RM Poultry Fish Mill in the Boyalia Van Stand area of Chitalmari Bazar. The primary victim, Ripon Mondol (35), son of the late Nikhil Chandra Mondol of Charkudaltala village, was reportedly dragged from his workplace and brutally assaulted by the group.

Dragged From Business and Beaten With Hammers

According to eyewitnesses and family members, the attackers stormed the premises before forcibly pulling Mondol outside. The mob then allegedly beat him repeatedly with hammers and other blunt weapons in full public view.

Witnesses claim the assailants confronted Mondol over a previous phone call, reportedly demanding to know why he had not answered, before unleashing the violent assault.

The attack left Mondol critically injured, requiring emergency medical intervention.

Elderly Mother Among Those Injured

As Ripon Mondol struggled to defend himself, family members and an employee attempted to intervene. They too were allegedly attacked.

Those injured include:

  • Charulata Mondol (60), Ripon’s elderly mother.
  • Nipun Mondol (40), his brother.
  • Somen Majumdar (27), an employee.

All three sustained injuries while trying to protect Ripon from the attackers.

Ripon Mondol was initially admitted to Chitalmari Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital due to the severity of his condition.

Alleged Robbery During the Attack

The victim’s family further alleges that the attackers looted cash and valuables during the assault.

According to family members, banks had remained closed for several days, resulting in business earnings being temporarily stored on-site. The attackers allegedly stole:

  • Approximately 1 lakh BDT from Ripon Mondol’s pocket.
  • Approximately 2 lakh BDT from the business cash box.
  • A mobile phone belonging to the victim.

The total reported loss is estimated at 3 lakh BDT, excluding the value of the stolen phone.

Police Aware of Attack but No Investigation Initiated

When contacted regarding the incident, Md. Nazrul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Chitalmari Police Station, acknowledged that police were aware of the attack.

However, despite the serious injuries, allegations of armed assault, and reported robbery, police stated that no formal written complaint had yet been filed and that legal action would proceed only after receiving one.

The response has prompted criticism from local residents and community members, who question why authorities have not launched a proactive investigation into a violent mob attack that reportedly left multiple people injured and one victim hospitalized.

Community Demands Immediate Arrests

The incident has generated widespread concern among local residents, with family members and community leaders demanding the immediate arrest of all those involved.

They have called for a thorough and impartial investigation, arguing that a violent attack carried out by a large armed group in broad daylight warrants urgent law-enforcement action regardless of procedural delays.

As Ripon Mondol continues to receive treatment for serious injuries, questions remain over accountability, public safety, and whether justice will be delivered for the victims of the attack.

No arrests had been reported at the time of publication.
