Hindu Voice Team: A Hindu youth from Fulgachh village under Moghalhat Union in Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh, has been arrested over allegations of making derogatory remarks about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on social media. However, the allegations are yet to be established, and questions have been raised over the need for an impartial investigation into the origin, authenticity and context of the alleged online statements.

The arrested individual has been identified as Amit Roy Shuvo, son of Paresh Roy, a resident of Ward No. 8 of Moghalhat Union. He reportedly worked at a garment factory in Dhaka.

According to police, Amit was arrested from the Nilphamari Sadar area late on Tuesday night, November 3. Police claimed that they had conducted search operations at various locations for three consecutive days and nights before tracing his whereabouts. He was subsequently brought to Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station.

According to local sources, allegations surfaced that Amit had posted objectionable remarks about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on social media. The incident reportedly triggered tension in the Fulgaachh area.

On Saturday, October 31, members of the local Muslim community and other residents staged a protest rally in the Fulgaachh Bazar area, demanding Amit’s immediate arrest and exemplary punishment.

Following the incident, a case was reportedly registered at Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station under the Cyber Security Act. Police subsequently launched an operation to arrest the accused. After conducting searches in Dhaka and several other locations, investigators reportedly traced him to Nilphamari Sadar.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station, Saad Ahmed, confirmed the arrest, stating that the accused had been apprehended promptly following the allegations.

Police further stated that Amit was produced before a court after his arrest, following which the court ordered that he be sent to judicial custody.

However, several important questions remain unanswered. No detailed information has yet emerged regarding Amit Roy Shuvo’s response to the allegations, the original source of the statements circulating on social media, or the authenticity of the digital evidence involved.

An impartial investigation is therefore essential. Allegations, particularly those circulating on social media, should not automatically be treated as established facts. The authenticity of the digital evidence, the context of the alleged statements and the accused’s opportunity to present his defence must all be examined through due legal process.

While respect for religious sentiments is important, the fundamental right of every accused person to a fair investigation and justice must also be protected. Until the allegations are established before a court of law, Amit Roy Shuvo must be treated as an accused person, not as a convicted offender.
