Tension prevailed at the historic Cachar College in Silchar on 25th of August, Tuesday after a clash broke out between two groups of students associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), reportedly amid a dispute over the wearing of hijab on the college campus.

The incident took place during the daytime when an NSUI membership drive was reportedly being conducted on the college premises. What initially began as a verbal altercation between members of the two groups allegedly escalated into a physical confrontation.

Different allegations have emerged regarding the immediate trigger for the confrontation. One side alleged that some female students participating in the programme were wearing hijabs and that objections to their attire contributed to the escalation. However, the precise circumstances leading to the clash and responsibility for the violence have yet to be established and require investigation.

Several students were reportedly injured in the confrontation. Police reached the college after receiving information about the incident and intervened to bring the situation under control. The injured students were subsequently sent to hospital for medical treatment.

The incident comes a day after a section of students from Cachar College reportedly submitted a memorandum to the Cachar district administration demanding restrictions on Muslim students wearing hijabs and caps on the college campus.

The reported clash the following day has brought the issue into sharper focus and triggered renewed discussion over dress codes, religious expression and discipline in educational institutions.

Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and determine whether any violations of law or institutional rules took place.
