Hindu Voice Team: As the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections approach, Humayun Kabir, a legislator from Trinamool Congress (TMC), has announced plans to lay the foundation stone for a mosque named Babri Masjid in the Muslim-majority district of Murshidabad. The event, he said, is scheduled for December 6 in Beldanga town.
According to Kabir, the mosque is expected to be completed within three years. He claimed that around two lakh people would attend the ceremony, with 400 “prominent personalities” present on stage.
The announcement immediately triggered criticism from political opponents. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders dubbed the plan “appeasement politics,” accusing the TMC of attempting to secure Muslim votes through religious appeasement. Meanwhile, some senior TMC members sought to distance the party from Kabir’s statement, calling it his personal view and not an official party decision.
Observers say the move could inflame communal sentiment in West Bengal, a state already witnessing tension over religious and political polarization. Analysts warn that associating a high-profile religious project with electoral strategy could escalate communal divisions ahead of the polls.
