Hindu Voice Team: Authorities have arrested five Muslim Men in connection with the alleged gang rape of a second-year medical student in Durgapur. The victim, originally from Odisha, is undergoing treatment in hospital and has given her testimony to police.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 10, when the student left the college campus to get food, accompanied by a male classmate. According to her father, after the classmate left, two to three men attacked her; later, two more joined in, and all five allegedly raped her. Following the assault, the accused reportedly offered her ₹5,000 to remain silent. Police have also detained the male friend for questioning.

The five arrested individuals have been identified as Sheikh Safiqul, a local resident of Durgapur; Sheikh Nasiruddin, Sheikh Reajuddin, Firdos Sheikh, and Sheikh Bauri. All five have been remanded in 10-day police custody as the investigation continues.

According to BJP leaders, Nasiruddin is alleged to have close links with the Trinamool Congress, a claim that the ruling party has not officially addressed.

The West Bengal Police confirmed the arrests and said a special investigation team is examining all evidence related to the case. Meanwhile, the Odisha Chief Minister strongly condemned the incident and urged the West Bengal government to ensure swift and stringent legal action.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu notice of the case and dispatched a member to Durgapur to oversee the investigation process.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee commented on the case, questioning how the student left campus late at night — remarks that drew sharp criticism from opposition parties, who accused her of victim-blaming. The Leader of the Opposition denounced the government’s handling of sexual assault cases in educational institutions, citing several similar past incidents as evidence of systemic negligence.

The victim’s father has appealed to the Odisha government to arrange for his daughter’s transfer to a hospital in Bhubaneswar, citing serious concerns about her safety in Durgapur.
