A storm of controversy has engulfed Deshapriya Balika Vidyamandir, Kestopur, after allegations surfaced that a Hindu schoolgirl was compelled to remove a Tulsi mala, a sacred symbol of Hindu faith, from her neck while attending classes.

The allegation, directed against teacher Nazrin Nahar, has triggered outrage among sections of the local community and reignited debate over religious freedom and equal treatment within educational institutions.

According to accounts provided by students and local residents, the girl was allegedly warned of serious consequences if she returned to school wearing the Tulsi mala. Classmates claim the incident left the student distressed and fearful.

The allegation has become particularly contentious because, according to residents, students wearing hijab reportedly face no comparable restrictions within the institution. Critics argue that if true, such unequal treatment raises serious questions about consistency, fairness, and respect for religious expression in a government-recognized educational environment.

The issue quickly moved beyond the school gates.

Concerned residents, parents, and members of the local Hindu community gathered to voice their objections, describing the incident as an affront to religious dignity and constitutional principles. Protesters demanded answers. More importantly, they demanded accountability.

Yet the controversy does not end there.

Nazrin Nahar is also facing separate allegations concerning the school’s Mid-Day Meal Scheme. Residents claim official records reflect food distribution for nearly 500 students, while only a fraction of that number are allegedly being served in reality. If established, such discrepancies would raise serious questions about the administration and monitoring of a welfare program intended to support children.

Further allegations relate to hygiene and sanitation.

Residents claim that food preparation areas are located dangerously close to bathroom facilities and are regularly exposed to foul odors. They further allege that sanitation standards are not being maintained adequately, prompting calls for immediate inspection by the relevant authorities.

Questions have also emerged regarding the school’s CCTV surveillance system.

According to residents, individuals associated with the institution have stated that the cameras were not operational during the period in question. The absence of functioning surveillance, if confirmed, would significantly hamper efforts to establish an objective account of the events and determine responsibility.

Meanwhile, video statements released by individuals claiming knowledge of the incident have attracted widespread public attention. Their accounts have intensified public scrutiny and fueled demands for an independent examination of the facts.

The central question now extends beyond a single allegation.

Was a student’s religious identity targeted?

Were public welfare resources administered properly?

Were institutional safeguards functioning when they were needed most?

And why, residents ask, has there been no visible resolution despite days of public concern?

As of June 16, community representatives maintain that no decisive action has been taken and that there are no visible indications of a comprehensive investigation being conducted. The absence of clear official communication has only deepened public skepticism and strengthened calls for transparency.

The allegations remain unverified and await official determination. However, for many residents, the issue has already evolved into a larger test of accountability, equal treatment, and public trust.

The community is now awaiting answers from the authorities charged with providing them.
