An alleged attempted abduction and violent assault involving a Hindu couple in Madarganj Upazila has ignited widespread concern across northern Bangladesh, once again spotlighting questions around public safety and vulnerability of minorities in Bangladesh.
What began as a routine return home from a local fair escalated into a traumatic ordeal. On the night of March 23, Ananta Robidas and his wife, Nishi Robidas, were travelling back from the Balijhuri Eid Fair when they were intercepted near the Kharika Beel area.
According to statements provided to police, a group of local youths began verbally harassing the couple. Witness accounts suggest that the situation quickly intensified as additional individuals joined the group, surrounding the couple in what appeared to be a coordinated act of intimidation.
The confrontation reportedly turned violent when the group, armed with crude local weapons, attempted to forcibly abduct Nishi Robidas. Her husband intervened, leading to a severe physical assault.
Local residents, alerted by the disturbance, began gathering at the scene, prompting the attackers to flee. Before escaping, the assailants allegedly robbed the couple of mobile phones and cash, adding theft to the list of charges under investigation.
Following a formal complaint at the Madarganj Model Thana, a targeted operation was initiated by law enforcement personnel, detaining three suspects Zahid, Saiful Islam Sami and Muhammad Saif from the Muktipara area.
Officer-in-Charge Shaker Ahmed confirmed that the individuals are currently under interrogation and that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend additional suspects.
“We have taken three suspects into custody based on the allegations. The investigation remains active, and further actions are being taken” he stated.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the ages of the detained individuals but indicated that they are believed to be teenagers.
The incident has rapidly gained traction on social media, drawing condemnation from local leaders and civil society voices. Many have called for a transparent and expedited judicial process, emphasizing the need for deterrence and accountability.
