Multiple BJP Functionaries Among 20 Muslims Arrested for Attack on BSF in Tripura: How Islamist Networks Exploit Electoral Support to Sustain Anti-National and Illegal Activities in Muslim-Majority Border Areas

An Organised Assault on Border Security Personnel

Twenty Muslim individuals, including four women, have been arrested following a violent assault on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel along the Ashabari–Rahimpur road under Sonamura in Tripura’s Sepahijhala district. The violence followed a BSF operation on the morning of 2nd November, when BSF personnel intercepted a smuggling operation near Border Pillar 174 and detained Hefzur Rahman. At least seven other suspected smugglers had  escaped into a nearby settlement. Malicious rumours alleging that Rahman was being brutally assaulted in BSF custody was spread through the locality, triggering an organised road blockade and mobilisation of local Muslim villagers near the Ashabari Gram Panchayat building.

The vehicle carrying Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar, Constable Manjit and Sunil Kumar was attacked by the mob armed with bamboo sticks, iron rods, dahs and stones. All three personnel sustained serious injuries and Constable Manjit’s service weapon was snatched during the assault.

The Political Protection Network: Allegations Involving BJP Functionaries

The government’s immediate response has been encouraging. Acting on an explicit request from the BSF, the Sonamura Sub-Divisional Administration initiated a substantial joint land-verification and border-demarcation exercise around Ashabari Border Outpost (BOP). Nevertheless, serious questions remain about the identities, political affiliations and possible organisational connections of those involved.

Particularly troubling are accusations from several local residents and journalists concerning the involvement of individuals associated with the BJP. According to them, Faruk Mia, the BJP booth president of BoxNagar Booth No. 13 and a close associate of local BJP MLA Tofazzal, was among the aggressors and one of the principal organisers of the road blockade.

Attackers Russel Mia (brother of Faruk Mia) and Kabir Hossain have been described as BJP party workers.

Al Amin Faruk, General Secretary of the BJP BoxNagar Yuva Morcha, who had played a significant role in organising the blockade and coordinating the ambush.

Beyond BoxNagar: A Pattern That Demands Investigation

The concerns are not confined to Tripura. Similar allegations have surfaced in West Bengal’s Canning Block II, particularly around the Moukhali–Taldi sector. Local residents and journalists have accused certain Islamist political operators of joining or cultivating relationships with the BJP while opposing decisive action against suspected illegal immigration and facilitating lucrative illegal syndicates, including activities connected with the unauthorised filling of the Matla River.

The Ashabari incident exposes troubling allegations of individuals associated with the BJP participating in, or facilitating, activities that undermine border security and law enforcement. It raises a larger question about Islamist networks cultivating political protection in Muslim-majority areas while shielding illegal immigration, smuggling and other anti-national activities. Tripura and other vulnerable border regions like Canning Block 2 of West Bengal require rigorous demographic, security and land-use assessments, stricter oversight of political networks and decisive action beyond electoral calculations, including lawful resettlement and demographic reclamation, wherever circumstances warrant it.

A political party’s electoral arithmetic cannot take precedence over national security. Nor can the protection of illegal networks be excused in the name of pragmatism. The rule of law must extend to every border village, every political office and every individual who believes that proximity to political power places them beyond its reach.
