Hindu Voice Team: Wikipedia has indefinitely banned its co-founder, Larry Sanger, from editing the online encyclopedia following a community decision that concluded he had violated the platform’s conduct policies during a campaign to promote editorial reforms.
The decision came after Sanger launched a proposal known as WikiProject Intellectual Diversity, an initiative that sought changes to Wikipedia’s editorial processes. According to Sanger, the proposal aimed to strengthen neutrality, broaden the range of acceptable sources, improve administrative accountability, and encourage greater ideological diversity among contributors.
Wikipedia editors who supported the ban argued that Sanger engaged in “off-wiki canvassing” by encouraging participation in internal discussions through external platforms. They also expressed concerns that his actions could influence consensus-building within the encyclopedia. The community ultimately voted in favour of an indefinite ban after administrators determined that the concerns warranted the strongest available sanction.
Sanger rejected the allegations, describing the process as lacking due process and arguing that he had merely sought to encourage broader participation in discussions about Wikipedia’s future. In public statements, he said the platform had become increasingly resistant to dissenting viewpoints and criticised what he described as ideological bias in its editorial culture.
The ban followed a series of public interviews in which Sanger criticised Wikipedia’s editorial practices, alleging that the encyclopedia had developed a left-leaning bias and, in discussions relating to India, claiming that it displayed an anti-Hindu bias. Those views have been disputed by Wikipedia and remain a subject of public debate.
Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales reportedly opposed the indefinite ban, calling the move “ludicrous” and arguing that intellectual diversity should be encouraged within the project. Despite his intervention, the community decision remained in place.
Larry Sanger co-founded Wikipedia in 2001 alongside Jimmy Wales but left the project in 2002. Over the years, he has repeatedly criticised the encyclopedia’s governance model and editorial direction, arguing that it has drifted away from its original commitment to neutrality.
