A shocking incident of alleged sexual assault, extortion, and harassment has come to light in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, creating widespread tension in the Sodepur area. Three members of the prime accused’s family have been arrested by the Khardah police following a public uproar.
The Incident
According to the police and the victim’s complaint, the survivor—a resident of a prominent housing complex in Khardah—was a former student of Barrackpore Air Force School. During her school days, she developed a friendship with a classmate named Wajid Iqbal. Over time, the two stayed in touch.
The victim alleged that Wajid occasionally borrowed money from her, which he would sometimes repay. Recently, he invited her out, claiming they were going to Dharmatala to hang out. Instead, he allegedly lured her to a banquet hall in Dharmatala and sexually assaulted her.
Following the incident, Wajid reportedly demanded 30 lakh rupees, pressured her to convert her religion, and forced her to agree to marriage. When she vehemently refused, he allegedly issued death threats against her family.
Public Outrage and Arrests
Last Wednesday night, the young woman and her mother were shopping near the Sodepur railway station. During this time, Wajid’s father and two brothers—identified as Nasim Alam, Sakib Iqbal, and Asif Iqbal—reportedly accosted and harassed the mother and daughter.
Hearing the victim’s frantic cries, local residents rushed to the spot, surrounded the accused individuals, and staged a strong protest. The chaotic situation drew a massive gathering, creating high tension in the station area.
Upon receiving information, the Khardah police arrived at the scene, rescued the accused from the angry mob, and took them into custody. Based on a formal written complaint filed by the victim, police arrested Nasim Alam, Sakib Iqbal, and Asif Iqbal.
Last Thursday, a magistrate at the Barrackpore Sub-Divisional Court remanded the arrested accused to judicial custody. Meanwhile, a manhunt has been launched by the police to track down and apprehend the prime accused, Wajid Iqbal, who is currently absconding.
