A 58-year-old Hindu woman was allegedly beaten to death by unidentified assailants after they entered her home in Chandina upazila of Comilla district on 17th of August, Monday night.

The incident took place at around 8:30 p.m. at Shil Bari in the Southpara area of Barkoit village under Barkoit Union. The deceased, identified as Bina Rani Ray, was the wife of Dilip Kumar Ray.

According to family members and local residents, Bina Rani had completed her evening religious rituals and was watching television at home when several attackers allegedly entered the house and began assaulting her, repeatedly striking her on the head.

Hearing her screams, nearby residents rushed towards the house. However, the attackers reportedly fled before they could be apprehended.

Local residents later rescued Bina Rani in a critically injured condition and took her to Cumilla Medical College Hospital. Doctors on duty declared her dead after she was brought to the hospital.

Her son, Tapas Ray, said his mother had been following her usual evening routine when the attackers entered the house.

“She had finished her evening prayers and was watching television when the assailants entered and started hitting her on the head. They fled before neighbours could reach the house,” he said.

Tapas said the family could not determine who carried out the attack or why his mother was targeted.

Barkoit Union Parishad Chairman Nur-e-Alam said preliminary local information suggested that a longstanding dispute could have played a role in the killing. He claimed that the victim’s family had reportedly been involved in a prolonged land dispute with residents of a neighbouring house.

Police, however, said the exact motive had not yet been established.

Chandina Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nuruzzaman said police went to the scene after receiving information about the incident and recovered the body.

The body was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital on Tuesday for post-mortem examination.

“The reason behind the killing and the identities of those responsible have not yet been confirmed,” the OC said.

Police have formed multiple teams to investigate the killing, establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have yet to announce any arrests.
