Bangladesh: Teenage Girl Dies Four Months After Converting to Islam in Jhenaidah district

Hindu Voice Team: A 14-year-old girl, identified as Mariam Khatun alias Sujata Karmakar Barma, was found dead inside a room at her home in Gilabaria village of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila on Monday (August 17).

According to information provided by the family and a written application submitted to the police, Mariam was the daughter of Sanad Karmakar of Gilabaria village. The family stated that she had left the Hindu faith and converted to Islam before marrying Md Sajjad Hossain. Following the marriage, she had been living at her husband’s residence. Her family said her death occurred approximately four months after the marriage.

According to the written complaint submitted to the police by Md Saurav Hossain, 21, son of Md Nurul Hossain, his wife, Mst Priya Khatun, found Mariam inside a room of the house at around 10:30am on Monday. She raised an alarm, following which family members rushed to the room and found Mariam. However, she had already died.

Police were informed following the incident and subsequently recovered the body and began the necessary legal procedures. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

An unnatural death case has reportedly been filed with the police. It has not yet been established whether the teenager died by suicide or whether other circumstances were involved. Police said the actual cause of death would be determined following the investigation and completion of the necessary legal procedures.
